Social media is a group of internet based web applications that brings users or members together by broadcasting information throughout a social network.

Social media marketing or social media optimization is using these social networks to promote a company product or service and as much as I hate using this term it is also a form of Web 2.0.

For many individuals it is important to their personal or private lives because it helps people stay in touch with friends or reunite with old friends but more importantly it allows people to become a member or a part of a community.

As for the world of commerce it allows a business to engage or even infiltrate an online target audience. There is a reason that Myspace, Twitter and Facebook are all multi-billion dollar entities now. This reason is because social media marketing is the most effective and most targeted way to reach the consumer.

The main goal of Google and other search engines is to follow the traffic and monitor internet usage so they can better understand index and content on the web. This provides for a better user experience when searching for content. If you want to find out what is hot all you have to do is follow the mass population to see what activities people are spending their time on, what topics are they talking about and more importantly what content are they observing.
